Energy for Personal Achievement

Personal Energy to Achieve more Goals

For the past four years, I have been keeping a diary where I have recorded my various energy and emotional states to find-out what makes me happy, makes me feel better.

I am in pre-retirement, now working as an independent consultant and keeping time for myself and for personal research on what makes people achieve and what’s not realized by most.

With the economy slowly coming-out of a recession and businesses and people struggling to get over it, it is more than ever important to keep you head above water and you need all of your personal energy to achieve success.

I keep saying to people, Life is not just about work, it's about effective and personal Living.

Effective Living

To get the most out of my life, I am constantly analyzing how I feel, what I achieve daily, and how my sense of satisfaction is related to those, across the various areas of my life.   While it takes a lot more than a blog or an article to understand the human mind and our own individual internal wiring, an important aspect of human performance is how Energy, and Emotions are directly related to personal performance and achievements.

Boosting Self Esteem with Martial Arts

Discussion on Sports effect on self-esteem

This question came up a few weeks ago on Yahoo Answers, which I like to review and occasionally answer questions from a holistic approach, mixed with a dose of science and personal experience. When my answer was chosen as the Best Answer, I was humbled, but glad and thought other people might benefit from the information it contained, so here it is:

Easy 10 points: Will this boost my self esteem and insecurness?

Hi, I'm 23 years old. I am, still am afraid of the world, just sligthly...

I thinking of trying martial arts for a month or two to see how that goes. Because in my opinion, I find it very ideal knowing that I can find something that interests me since I am a very motivated person in doing the things I LIKE.

And I'm not thinking of using martial arts in a sense of beating up someone who throws a punch at me, but only using it for really life threatening situations. Because honestly, everyone sees me as a very quiet, laid back, gentle individual.

I already took an introductory course, and beforehand did research on which martial arts style to choose that I like. I also finally saved up money to take the lessons.

And one thing I tend to notice about myself is if I'm paying for something out of my own pocket, I want to get my money's worth. So I WILL excersise. Any advice?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Yes taking martial arts lessons will probably help your self-esteem and confidence.

I did the same thing in my early twenties, and in addition to making me healthier and stronger, I started feeling better able to react to threatening situations. Just thinking and feeling safer made we look stronger and less likely to be attacked. Of course, you have to stick with the lessons for a little bit to get those benefits, so think positively about this, and make sure you enjoy your classes.

Some clubs have different styles and approach, so it is worthwhile visiting a few before your actually join: some of them are more spiritual, some more about learning and performing the moves right, while others are more involved in sparring (physical combats with contact). All of them are good for you if you like that style and you will get the benefit of becoming stronger and getting better reactions even if you don't do full contact sparring.

And finally, know why you are doing this, set realistic Goals with your instructor and Enjoy the journey !

I have a yellow belt karate, tried jiu-jitsu for a bit, didn't like the close contact .

Mind and Body Harmony with Goals

Mind and Body  - Separate things?

As a scientist

I like to look at a person as a whole system, just like an aircraft is made-up of a fuselage, engine, aircrew, controls,  and wings.  Have a look here at a speech I gave recently.  I look at the Mind and the Body as the two main components of us people.  There are lots of other ways to break us down into more details, but it is sometimes useful to look at the big picture.  The Mind - Body - Spirit approach is a simple but complete way to look at yourself.

Mind

Our Mind is usually regarded as what is stored in our head with neuronal connections and chemical interactions. Taken at the highest level, it includes what we think about consciously  but also unconsciously  emotions, senses, nervous system, and biological processes to control some of our vital body functions without us having to think about it (I wouldn't want my heart to stop when I fall asleep!).  The mind may also include a certain spiritual aspect of our thinking.

Body

This one is easy: our physical us is mostly what's not coded into your head, although your head and your physical brain are part of your body. That is the simplest way to divide humans and it's used this way quite a lot.  Our body is what allows us to move around and actually touch things and interact with people. It allows us to communicate, eat and reproduce.

Spirit

This generally represents something larger and more encompassing that just your internal mind in your head or your body.  Of course that is the case with religious faith,  but many people also think of the spiritual aspect of their lives as a higher purpose regarding with how they are linked to others, a greater good, or aspirations in some not necessarily scientifically understood manner.  It used to be that the spiritual aspect was impossible to measure in a scientific manner, but breakthrough in brain imaging and positive psychology has come up with new scientific evidence clearly indicating there are benefits of thinking like this and that it is definitely good for you and will likely make you feel happier and more positive.

The interaction between the body and the mind

This interaction is constant between our three essential components (Mind-Body-Spirit).  My mind thinks, and allows me to have ideas and concept to communicate to people, while my body translate these thought into actions, something that can be communicated.  It is important to keep this team working together: your mind must look after your body, or else the body will become weak. If your body weakens, your mind will lack energy to process information and direct actions properly, which will make the body even weaker.
